Description
Summary:Lembupurwo Coastal Area was rehabilitated by Universitas Gadjah Mada in 2008 by planting Casuarina plants. Casuarina plantation could improve the quality of ecosystem and was expected to become a good habitat for butterflies. The research was done to know the growth of casuarina plant and the effect of rehabilitation on the diversity of butterflies. The growth of the casuarina (height and diameter) was observed in the five plots measured 20x20 m2. Understory plants was observed on the five plots measured 1x1 m2. Diversity of butterflies was observed by counting buterflies in the transect of 100 m for 1 hour in casuarina plantation and open area (no rehabilitation) of Lembupurwo. The observation on butterflies was done four times in April to Desember 2013. The result showed that the height and diameter of casuarina were 6.8 m and 8.9 cm respectively and the survival rate was 88.6 percent. More species of understory plants was found in casuarina plantation than in open area. Ten species of butterflies was found in casuarina plantation and 8 species was found in open area. Jamides celeno was the most dominant species of butterflies in casuarina plantation and Eurema blanda was the most abundant in the open area. Diversity index of butterflies in casuarina plantation (2.1) was higher than that in open area (1.5). Rehabilitation program seems to increase the diversity of butterflies. .
