| description | In order to provide an additional alternative raw material for pulping industry,
a study on the possibility for utilizing balsa (Ochroma piramidale) as a pulp material
had been conducted. A tree known as a pioneer species, which it can grow rapidly
and has short rotation.
Three years old balsa wood, obtained from Lumajang, East Java, was pulped
by using sulfate process. A Completely Randomized Design with two factors was
applied in this study. The first factor was Cooking period, compounds from three
different levels: 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes. The second factor was
active alkali concentration, compounds from two different levels: 16% and 18%.
The results of research showed that O. piramidale was appropriate to be used
for making pulp with sulphate process as it gave yield ranged from 27,42 � 44,05 % |
