Summary: | The problem of food security in Indonesia still happens due to the
presence of Indonesia society's reliance on rice as their main source of
carbohydrates which become a barrier in creating of food security. The objectives
of this research were to determine the diversity of non-rice crops as alternative
sources of carbohydrates, food sufficiency and food consumption patterns of nonrice
crops in Linamnutu Village, South Central Timor Regency of East Nusa
Tenggara province. The research was done by interview method conducted in
every household by means of stratified random sampling to gain representation of
hamlet and topography types (lowland and upland). Fifty nine households were
interviewed in three hamlets. Field survey was carried out to identify food crops at
four-point sampling locations (plot). Plot 1 represented home yard, plot 2 was
located between the bushes, plot 3 was located in a palm-filled gardens with
mature age and plot 4 was located in the area of rice fields. The data was analyzed
by descriptively. The Results of interview and field survey showed a relatively
high diversity of food crops, indicated by 49 species which potentially could be
used as alternative food resources during lean season. However the level of
sufficiency food still was not fulfilled, because of insufficient amount of rice
available in the household. The availability of rice and maize yields had not been
sufficient. In addition, the diversity of non-rice foodstuffs was still low with
consumption patterns shifted from corn to rice, because of presumptive high
social value of rice consumption in the society.
