Summary:Waste management through waste bank is one variant of community participation in waste management from its sources. Pelita Harapan waste bank in RW 04 Ballaparang Sub District, Rappocini District, Makassar City is one of active waste bank in the city that still continues to operate this day in Makassar City. This research purposed to evaluate the waste management through the Pelita Harapan waste bank and to explains the sustainability prospect of Pelita Harapan waste bank. The research found that waste management through the Pelita Harapan waste banks in RW 04 Ballaparang Sub District, operationaly and technically, financially and community participation has been effective since it meets the indicators contained in the SNI 3242-2008 on waste management in the settlement. At the institutional, monitoring and evaluation aspects have not been effective yet because of the lack of institutions/organizations capacity that manage the waste comprehensively and lact of monitoring and evaluation of related local goverment. Waste management through waste bank has sustainability prospect since from the view point of economic aspect, it can secondly from the additional income and reduce the operational cost of municipal waste management. Ecological perspective, the waste banks has been able to reduce the waste that will be disposed to landfill and reduce the potential of CH4 formation as well as the direct benefits obtained by community with the environment conditions cleaner, it is socially acceptable by society, seen by the public participation and communication among all stakeholders. Lessons learned from this study are: (1) participation of the community by waste management that begun by waste separated activities, (2) organizations/institutions that manage the separation, (3) cooperation with waste recycling collectors and waste recycling craftsmen, (4) assistance of NGOs, (5) government support in socialization and implementation of regulations and provision of waste management infrastructure.
