Summary: | Background. Depression in geriatric patients is a major problem that has medical, social, and economic consequences. Chronic stressors and hard for the individual, it can cause hormonal changes that increase IL-6 were positively correlated with the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (noradrenergic). In addition IL-6 also affects the HPA axis resulting in elevated levels of cortisol, which activates the sympathetic system. Treatment of depression consists of three kinds of psychosocial interventions, pharmacotherapy and combination therapy. LPD is one of the methods in mind and body therapy, which the method is combines between relaxation and remembrance with a focus on breathing exercises and words contained zikir (relaxation and repetitive prayer) to evoke the relaxation response which is expected to improve symptoms of stress or depression
Objective. This study was conduct to determine the effect of LPD on changes of IL-6 level in the elderly with depression symptoms.
Methods. This study used a quasi experimental methods, performed in posyandu lansia Manisrenggo Klaten district in Central Java, between the months of September 2012 to January 2013. Distribution data was tested using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test statistic (Shapiro-Wilk). The difference in IL-6 level each group by t test for unpaired groups if the normal distribution or Mann Whitney test when the distribution was not normal. LPD influence of IL-6 level changes scores vs the control group were tested with independent t-test or the Wilcoxon test depending on the distribution of the data distribution. Differences were considered significant if p <0.05 with 95% confidence intervals.
Results. There is changes in IL-6 level after LPD on the treatment group (p >0.05). The changes of IL-6 serum level in control group is significant statistically (p<0.05). Obtained mean difference in IL-6 level LPD group compared to the control group and was statistically not significant ( p >0.05 )
Conclusion. LPD unable to decrease IL-6 level in elderly with depression symptom. There is changes in IL-6 serum level on booth group, but the value of IL-6 level is higher on control group. IL-6 level changes in treatment group is statistically not significant on baseline and after LPD
