Summary: | This research aims to understand the period of estrous cycle, length of
estrous, and estrous quality of Ongole crossbreed heifers and cows. The materials
were used 8 estrous heifers and 8 estrous cows with field observations methods.
The data about period of estrous cycle is obtained based on the breeder notes,
whereas the length of estrous and quality of estrous is obtained based on
observation.
The obtained result of the observation of estrous period on heifers is about
20,87 ± 0,36 days and for the cows is about 21,00 ± 0,76 days. The heifers have
length of estrous for approximately 23,25 ± 2,12 hours and for the cows are
approximately 24,25 ± 1,67 hours. Most of heifers and cows showed symptoms
redden vaginal mucosa, oedema of the vulva and become warm. Heifers do not
show symptoms of estrus vocalization, while 1 of 8 cows showed the symptoms.
There was 1 of 8 heifers which prior to stand when it was mounted and when it
was trying to mount other cattle, while in cows there were 4 of 8 cows. There were
7 of 8 cows on each group showed sticky mucus flowing out from the vagina.
Based on the research result, there were no significant differences in the
period of the estrous cycle. The cows have length of estrous longer than heifers.
The estrous quality showed estrous symptoms are redden vaginal mucosa, oedema
of the vulva and become warm and all of them are equally. There are several
variations in the estrous quality of heifers and cows like vocalization, prior to
stand when it was mounted and it was trying to mount other cattle, and show
sticky mucus flowing out from the vagina.
