synthesis in batch reactor and liquid-liquid equilibrium of system containing α-pinene, α-terpineol,
chloroacetic acid and water are presented. A heterogeneous kinetics and liquid-liquid equilibrium
models developed based on the experimental data obtained are also reported. Furthermore, based on
the kinetics and equilibrium models obtained, the developed mathematical models that can be used to
calculate the reactive distillation equipment for α-terpineol production at industrial scale are then
described.
In the experimental kinetics study, turpentine was poured into a batch reactor (three-necked
flask) equipped with condenser, thermometer and stirrer, then warmed up to the desired temperature.
The study investigates the effects of temperature, the mol ratio of chloroacetic acid to α-pinene, and
the stirring rate. A heterogeneous kinetics model was proposed to quantitatively describe the hydration
process of α-pinene. It turned out that the hydration reaction is reversible. The results showed that the
