Summary: | Nowadays, welding technique in industrialization has been used in many machine�s construction. It is because the machine which uses connection technique is simpler. Welding usually used to repair, make hard layer on the tool, thicken the thin part, joint two metal or shaft, and others. The welding construction have to consider the balance between the kind of material which will is used be welded and method which will be used in welding process, so the result of welding have good strength joint. In this point the base is efficient and cheap. It can also save power and energy. The aim of the study is to determine the tensile strength, the micro hardness value from base metal until connection part welding, and the microstructure photo by using friction welding.
The method in this study is started from identifying the problem which occur in friction welding. The second is doing experiment use stainless steel series 316 cylindrical solid, as much as 7 specimens, 1 specimen for raw materials with a length of 20 cm and 6 specimens for friction welding of length 10cm. The third is material testing by using tensile test, micro Vickers hardness test, and microstucture photos. The final method is analyzing the data which is got from the test.
The results of the testing shows that the tensile strength of friction welding decrease if compared to initial material. The fracture of all stainless steel connections use friction welding method are dominated by fracture brittle. The hardness value from base metal until connection part is reduce. Finally, microstructure photo used magnification 100x shows that the weld area, the HAZ area, and the base metal area is dominated by austenitic structure.
