Summary: | This research deals with the translation of Ayu Utami�s novel, Saman. It is
aimed to identify translation problems of Ayu Utami�s Saman at word level. In
addition, it also describe strategies to solve the problem.
Data was carried out by identifying words which have problem of
translation based on Mona Baker�s theory. Analysis was done by classifying data
based on strategies which is used in translation, then analyze the propositional and
expressive meaning of the words.
Based on the analysis that had been done, it was found that culture-specific
concept problem occured in 16 words, the target language lacks a specific term
(hyponym) problem occured in 5 words, and differences in expressive meaning
problem occured in 3 words. The problem that used the most strategies to solve is
the culture-specific concept which uses 4 solving strategies. The target language
lacks a specific term (hyponym) problem used 1 strategy, and differences in
expressive meaning problem used 1 strategy. In addition, there are 5 words which
meaning are little bit far from what in the source texts are meant to. There�s only a
word which was paraphrased by mentioning 그림�극 (wayang) of 5 wayang
characters.
