Description
Summary:Source of natural dyes is required to minimize the use of harmful dyes and the dependence on imported cosmetics. Ethanolic extract of hibiscus petals (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.) contains anthocyan that can be used as natural pigments. This study aims to determine whether or not hibiscus lipstick can produce a preferred color, good and stable physical properties, also not irritating. Three percent, 6%, and 9% of high viscousity ethanolic extract that were obtained from dried hibiscus petals extraction, were formulated into lipstick. Hedonic test was performed on lipstick colors, while the organoleptic, hardness, adhesion power, melting point, and dispersive power had been tested for 4 weeks, and then analyzed using ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Friedman with 95% confidence level. The primary irritation skin test was done based on OECD 404. The results showed that the color of lipstick with 6% and 9% hibiscus extract are preferred by respondents, but not stable during 4 weeks of storage. Lipstick has good and stable scent, taste, homogeneity, pH and hardness. Lipsticks melting point are higher than 42 º C, but decreases during storage. Adhesion power of lipstick with 3% extract is good and stable, whereas at a concentration of 6% and 9%, the adhesion powerof hibiscus lipstick are higher than lipsticks on the market. Lipstick does not leave mass when smeared, but the intensity of its color are lower than the ones at the market. Lipstick does not causing the primary irritation reactions in animals
