description | Ear-elongation done by Dayak Kenyah tribe is a potential contribution for the
tourism attraction in Samarinda, a province in Kalimantan Timur. The tradition is
introduced as a part of the cultural display of Desa Budaya Pampang, or the
Pampang Cultural Village as the tourism objects attraction. The tradition began as a
way of differencing the Dayak Kenyah tribe with monkeys, as at that time the tribe
lived deep inside the jungle of Kalimantan. Today, for the Dayak Kenyah tribe, the
tradition is their identity in term of age, a standard of beauty, and as training of
patience in living their life.
This research uses descriptive approach based on the qualitative data. The
subject of the research is Dayak Kenyah people who have long ears, and the
representatives of the management of Desa Budaya Pampang. The method of
collecting the data is through the library studies and interview with four informants.
The analysis method is qualitative.
This research results in better understanding regarding the meaning behind the
ear-elongation tradition of Dayak Kenyah people, and understanding in the
importance of keeping this tradition on the list of the attractive tourism object in Desa
Budaya Pampang. Withmore tourism activities, the people of the village have more
chances to be actively participating in the process, as well as earning some money
from it. The process is done with the help of the management team. The duty of the
management team is as the manager of tourism attraction, guide, administrative and
as one of the parties in the tourism activities.
From the research, it can be concluded two things that relates the tradition and
the tourism activity. The first is to preserve the tradition of the ancestor of Dayak
Kenyah tribe. The second is that the tourism activities in Desa Budaya Pampang can
be a helping hand in increasing the income for both the village and the government,
as it is managed as tourism object. As the tribe realizes that their tradition is unique
and interesting, it is suggested to the tribe to have more positive view in managing the
process of recognition to others through tourism. |
