description Light intensity control does not only have an impact on energy savings, but also provides an appropriate level of illuminance to meet its requirement. An application of series-compensator MERS as a light intensity controller will be proposed. Experiment is conducted by connecting MERS in series with fluorescent lamp and magnetic ballast. MERS can inject voltage at a variable value by controlling its firing angle. The voltage change in lamp will affect the light intensity produced by the lamp itself. Experimental results show that MERS with 6.43 μF of capacitor can operate as a light intensity controller on two 36 W fluorescent lamps within range of 34.4% - 106.2%. The maximum reduction of efficacy is 8.1%, whereas its maximum addition is 3%.
