excellent health service shall be balanced by numbers of personnel available for
health care, and has become special challenge on health service industry. Hospital
as part of major health service industry is facing problems as the increasing number
of patients visits is not complemented by adequate number of professionals and
infrastructure. Opportunity to pursue formal education is limited and there is no
chance for non-doctor professionals to reach the highest career level at the hospital.
This research aimed to understand the significant meaning of career for
professionals in health service organization. This research was engaged by using
phenomenological approach by involving 10 respondents. Two themes were
obtained in this research. The first theme is learning while the second is sharing. The
meaning of career for professionals in health service organization is to conduct
learning and sharing. They use learning in almost all occasion when in contact with
patients. Learning is carried out in the form of informal learning. Professionals do the
informal learning mostly from experiences, internet, and case-based study. Sharing
is the second finding from this research. The form of sharing is mentoring,
discussion, Hospital Community Health Education or PMKRS (Penyuluhan
Kesehatan Masyarakat Rumah Sakit), and interactive radio dialogue. Professionals
do the sharing to patients and patients family, colleagues and other professionals.
Happiness that comes because of the ability to share and make the patients feel
better makes professionals love their profession. Condition of patients who were not
getting better becomes their motivation to learn and improve their competencies.
Informal learning is mostly used because this model is the easiest one to perform,
considering the situation, condition and limited opportunity to pursue formal learning.
Key words: learning, sharing, informal learning
