| description | Rem Koolhaas is one of contemporary architect whose ideas about
architecture and urban planning makes him considered as one of the architects that
most intensive in urban issues. His achievement as an architect, academic and
theoretician become an interesting phenomenon as well as his successful in
international architecture competition and awards for architectural works showed
that Koolhaas is able to deliver his ideas in architecture and urbanism paradigm.
Research on the study of theory, methods and applications in Rem Koolhaas
architectural work aims to find out Rem Koolhaas's approaches in architecture and
urbanism context. Theoretical study of Rem Koolhaas approaches in architecture
and urbanism, based on the assessment carried out by the related literature and
through his works. The approach of this study is rationalistic approach and the
method used is content analysis method. This method contains of the cases
represented through the data which are textual discourse, drawings and diagrams
that represent the formulation of the study of theory and methods of Rem Koolhaas
and their application in works of architecture.
The results of study based on Rem Koolhaas's textual works, Delirious New
York: A Retroactive Manifesto of Manhattan and S, M, L, XL, and the study of his
architectural works, Milstein Hall Cornell University, Dee and Charles Wyly
Theatre, Seattle Public Library, and Seoul National University Museum of Art. The
study shows that \"Theory of bigness\" is a fundamental ideas of Rem Koolhaas.
\"Theory of bigness\" offers something new in architecture and urbanism paradigm
which \"old\" architecture principles like composition, scale, proportion and detail is
no longer needed in \"bigness\". Even though his architectural works has no special
features in physical attributes, but it's show similarities in terms of making
Dissapearance and Dismantlement as fundamental methods in Koolhass's
architecture design process. Overall, Rem Koolhaas with his \"Theory of bigness\" as
well as his methods Dismantlement and Dissapearance offering a new way to
assemble architecture as response calling into urban issues, also as another
description of thought and concepts in the field of architecture and urbanism. A
new perception in architecture and urbanism context.
