description Lightning is one of the predominant causes of disturbances on the distribution system, particularly in overhead line. Riau has a very high lightning intensity, which is 217 thunderstorm days per year. It is a serious threat for overhead line 13.8 kV owned by PT EMP Mallaca Strait SA. Recognizing these conditions, lightning protection system should be designed so as not to interfere with a reliable production process in PT EMP Mallaca Strait SA. Improved system performance can be done by the installation of overhead ground wire and lightning arresters. Installation of overhead ground wire with protection angle of 25o can reduce the probability of occurrence of flashover at 95.7%. Lightning arresters will work optimally to reduce the number of flashover when mounted on each pole. The possibility of flashover increased by 73% from 0% when lightning arresters mounted with 2 pole spacing than when lightning arresters mounted on each pole.
