Summary: | One of the successful stand-up comedies is Kill the Messenger. It was edited together from three performances: one at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London, one at the Apollo Theater in New York, and one at the Carnival City Casino in Johannesburg. The creation of humor in stand-up comedy is seen as a combination of various linguistic features of joke telling such as (1) the structure of humor discourse in stand-up comedy (2) the use of pragmatic aspects to create humor, (3) the use of the linguistics aspects to arouse humor, (4) the functions of humor itself. This research generally aims to describe humor discourse in stand-up comedy Kill the Messenger and to find out the humor caused by existing linguistics aspects based on the four problems formulated before. This research is descriptive qualitative with sequence of steps: data collection, data classification, and data analysis. The researcher collected the data by observing and then taking note for classifying. The researcher then analyzed the data through descriptive analysis method and presented them descriptively by expressing the analysis through words or sentences.
The research finds out that �Kill the Messenger� uses various structures and pattern like one liners joke, question and answer joke, simple structure, and complex structure. �Kill the Messenger� also uses linguistics aspects as the trigger like morphology, syntactic, semantic, deixis, and language styles. Pragmatically, this research describes humor as seen from the flouting of cooperative principle, politeness principle, and the use of irony principle. This research also finds out the functions of humor in terms of solidarity, power, and psychology.
