description This research analyzes the use of the English language that is used by pedicab drivers in Malioboro tourism area when communicating with foreign tourists. learning informally from direct conversations with foreign tourists results in variations of English speech that are unique and different from the rules of standard English. This research was a qualitative descriptive study which aimed to describe the phenomenon of English variation used by pedicab drivers on grammar and lexicon aspects. In collecting data, it used both participatory and nonparticipatory observation accompanied by the recording and noting techniques. In analyzing the data used padan method appealing hubung banding techniques. The results of the data analysis are presented with informal methods by using ordinary words. The results show that the English used by pedicab driver has undergone a change of the rules of standard and modified by local elements from Javanese and Indonesian. Its use has occurred simplification, irregularities, and errors in the application of rules. In grammatical forms include affixes elimination, plural marker and tenses elimination, inversion, and elimination of sentence elements. lexical forms show that are found the use of one word for another function to extend the original meaning, borrowing from the Javanese and Indonesian, and the use of hedges. Both forms are influenced by several factors: the linguistic factor and non-linguistic. Linguistic factors consist of the differences in the language grammar of Indonesian and English, direct translation from Indonesian, semantic focus, and behaviour of economical language whereas the non-linguistic factors includes education, occupation, age, culture, and geography.
