Summary: | The use of language as a representation of attitude in a social interaction,
and as a mean to produce certain discourses is an interesting matter in critical
linguistics field. The objectives of this study are to describe the use of linguistics
features in representing social practices involved in Hasan Rouhani�s speech,
including the representation of his attitude toward some issues contained in the
speech, the description about the social actions, and the inclusivity and exclusivity
of the social actors involved.
This is a critical discourse analysis study. The data is a full text of Hasan
Rouhani�s international speech in front of the general Assembly of the United
Nations which was collected from one of Israel official website
(www.timesofisrael.com). The relevant use of the language in this data was noted
and identified based on the formulation of the problem. In the next procedure, the
data was analyzed with critical discourse analysis which is developed by using
paraphrase technique and content analysis.
The result showed that in his political speech, Hasan Rouhani represented
his attitude towards various issues through the use of modality and negation.
Besides that, to represent the social actions in his speech, Hassan Rouhani also
used linguistics features such as the word choice, transitivity, conjunction,
explanatory clause, and presupposition. Whereas, to display the social actors
involved in his speech, Hasan Rouhani used inclusive strategy including passive
form, nominalization, and infinitive clause, and exclusive strategy including
determination-indetermination, abstraction-objectivation, differentiation,
categorization, individualization, and circumstantialization
