Summary: | Bleaching is a treatment to improve the appearance of natural dentition to
make it brighter using bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide. Restorative
treatment using composite resin are frequently seen in patients dentition who
receive bleaching treatment. Hybrid composite resin restoration is one of the
composite resin type which frequently used by the dentist. The use of clorhexidine
mouthwash is rising along the public awareness of their oral health.
Chlorhexidine is an antibacterial with a broad spectrum which has negative
effects on color stability of composite resin restorations. The aim of this study was
to determine the effect of 0,2% chlorhexidine mouthwash to discoloration on
hybrid composite resin restorations after bleaching treatment.
The speciments in this study were 10 samples of the hybrid composite resin
which (Filtek Z100) were made using fiberglass mold with 20 mm diameter and 2
mm thickness. The specimens were divided into two groups, group A without
bleaching applications, and group B with application of 40% hydrogen peroxide
(Opalescence Boost) bleaching gel. All samples were immersed in artificial saliva
for 24 hours at 37oC, initial color measurement was conducted followed by using
a chromameter. All specimens were them immersed in 20 ml 0.2% chlorhexidine
mouthwash (Minosep) for 24 hours, then the final color were measured using
chromameter. The calculation of discoloration on the entire sample were
conducted using CIE L*a*b and calculated with E*ab (L*a*b) =
[(L*)2+(a*ab)2+(b*ab)2]1/2 formula. Finally, the data were analyzed using
independent t-test.
The result showed that there was a significant difference discoloration
between the two groups of hybrid composite resin samples (p < 0,05), however
the discoloration were not visually perceptible (E < 3,3). The average color
alteration acquired shown that sample groups with more discoloration were those
which had done bleaching application. Based on the results, it could be inferred
that the use of 0,2% chlorhexidine mouthwash could possibly affected the
discoloration of hybrid composite resin post bleaching treatment.
