Summary: | Russian Federation is geographically vast, therefore it is necessary for the
federation to unite its peoples who are ranging from hundreds of ethnicities with
different cultural backgrounds by enforcing Russification policy. The
Russification policy is named after the majority of the federation, Rus. The
policy is one example of cultural assimilation done by the majority (Rus) to be
applied by the minorities (non-Rus). This policy not only controls ethnical
identities of the minorities but also religious identities and languages usage, and
has been applied there since the age of Russian Empire.
The Maris are one of Finno-Ugric nations who live in Russian Federation,
in the middle Volga region. They mostly live in their own titular republic named
Republic of Mari El where they only account up to 43% of the population. The
Maris have significantly resisted the Russification policy since the very first
interaction with the Rus (through the expansion of Ivan The Terrible). The efforts
to resist the Russification policy still exist up until today. The Maris are distinct
kindred of the Magyars (Hungarians), Estonians, and Finns
