Summary: | The development of IT made development Japanese entertainment industry grow faster,
include its pop culture. The expantion through mass media are first force from that pop culture
development. In Indonesia, especially at Yogyakarta, the most famous and almost fanatic Japanese
pop culture are Anime, Manga, Harajuku Style, J-Music, and Tokusatsu. They gave big impact for
the youth in Yogyakarta.
The aim of the research are used to know how the exact of Jejepangan identity in cosplay
community in Yogyakarta sensed by the members and pattern of their interaction, so that
community can be made. By using the descriptive qualitative research method, this research took
six informans by using purposive technique where they have categorized before. The collecting
data was done by indepth interview and direct observation through interview guide. The data was
processed by grouping the data first, then interpretation, and take conclusion.
After analizing the data, the writer got that imitation process in cosplay activity should
made the cosplayers to act and imitate the figures of Japanese pop culture as real as the costume to
the characters. Through this cosplay community, the youth in Yogyakarta could expressed or
actualized themselves in fashion, so it turned up new identity called Jejepangan identity. It made
them look different from the others. The form of self expression in cosplay gave value and
meaning for the cosplayers as the form of creativity, increase self confidence, look for the famous
and proud, sacrifice, and also happiness. It gave description that Japanese pop culture has been one
of references for the youth to act more positive.
