Summary: | Background: Imprisonment and living as prisoners is an unwanted stressor carrying heavy stigma. This can be considered as major stressor requiring severe adjustment. Singleton et al. (1998) reported that depression among prisoners was affected by the duration of imprisonment, the time spent inside the prison, and the lost of source of income. The longer the imprisonment and the lost of source of income would make the prisoners more vulnerable to depression.
Objectives: This study was aimed to assess depression among prisoners in Cebongan prison and its association with other variables.
Method: This study was conducted at Cebongan prison with 205 prisoners as study subjects (199 males and 6 females). The data was collected on February 2014 using personal data questionanire and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) to assess depression. This study is an observasional with a cross sectional design. The data was then analyzed statistically using computer software.
Results: We found that 84,9% of our subjects were depressed. Both bivariate and multivariate analyses showed that the duration of imprisonment and income were associated with depression among prisoners.
Conclusions: Depression among prisoners was associated with the duration of imprisonment and income. Nevertheless further study with more than one prison is required to confirm our findings. |
