Physician-patient relationship in most healthcare settings in Indonesia implements
the paternalistic model, in which patient�s participation is limited.
Objective: The objective of this study is to explore forms of patient�s
participation and factors that influence it for patient at Eka Hospital. The result
will also be used to propose recommendations that relates with patient
empowerment in Eka Hospital.
Method: This research is a qualitative study using grounded theory. A total of 8
inpatients and 7 outpatients from the cardiovascular department were offered to
participate. Data were collected through in depth interviews to explore patient�s
characteristics, knowledge and experience, disease history and governance, health
care process, roles in healthcare, role of hospitals and health professionals in
patient participation. Systematic coding was used to analyze the data.
Results: The concept of \"Patient Participation�s Pyramid\" was developed, which
describes the relationship of four components for patient�s participation in
hospital. Base of the pyramid is formed by three interconnected triangles, the role
of the hospital, patient motivation, and the role of medical personnel. Top of the
pyramid position is occupied by forms of patient's involvement, as the
culmination of three components that support underneath.
Conclusions: Patient�s participation arises when patient�s motivation is supported
by medical personnel and the hospital. The main motivation of patient is the
desire to be healthy, so patient�s involvement tends to be more focused on his/her
medical treatment or individual level. This study highlight the importance of
communication skills from hospital�s staff, as it is the key for developing patient�s
participation in the hospital. |
