| description | Background: Neuraxial epidural technic have been used widely as a single
injection nor using catheter. The purpose of this study was to determine the
incidence of bacterial colonization on the tip of catheter and to identify the risk
factors that influence.
Methods: The study design was cohort prospective, subject of the study was
epidural catheter were used post elective surgery.With sterile technique tip of
catheter was cut about 3 cm length, and then it was cultured to observe the
incidence of colonization. A multivariate analyze of the potential variable was
used to identify the risk factors.
Results: The incidence of bacterial colonization was 50%, The risk factors were
preoperative leucosit count ( OR 26,329, p 0,023) Time of insertion (OR 3,015, p
0,048) and duration of insertion (OR 19,512, p 0,014).
Conclusion: There is a higher incidence of bacterial colonization in the tip of
epidural catheter in patient with the risk factors of preoperative leucosit count,
time of insertion and duration of insertion. |
