description | Men and animals have been living together and interacted with each other
for a very long time. The closeness is reflected verbally within the use of animal
concept in proverb. This study intends to reveal the dog concept used in German
and Indonesian proverbs, the morals messages conveyed within, and the proverbs
which expressed synonymy. This study is based on the data obtained from the
German proverbs book Beyer Sprichwörter Lexikon and Indonesian proverbs
book Kamus Peribahasa. Via exploring the dog metaphors across the two
languages in the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Great Chain
Metaphor Theory, this study aims to identify the existence of both universality and
individuality of metaphors cross-linguistically when the dog is mapped onto
human beings.
The research method used in this study is qualitative and
quantitative-descriptive. The realization of this method is carried out by
presenting data preparation, data analysis and the presentation of the findings. The
data analysis is consulted to the native speaker of German. The analyzed data are
presented by using both formal and informal method.
The findings show that, first, the metaphorical expressions containing the
word dog in German and Indonesian proverbs are both mainly generated from the
dogs behavior and its relation with human beings. In terms of evaluation, the
dogs metaphorical expressions have more derogative meaning in German and
Indonesian. Second, there are 30 moral messages in German proverbs and 9 moral
messages in Indonesian proverbs. Third, from 93 German proverbs containing the
word dog which are analyzed, there are 43 (46.2%) proverbs that have synonymy
in Indonesian proverbs. |
