research aims to understand and analyze farmers livelihood strategies were
developed in the face of catastrophic flooding.
Livelihoods approach was used to analyze farmer livelihood strategies in the face
of annual floods. This study was performed using a deductive approach. The data
collected by comprises primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained
by interview. In other hand, secondary data were obtained from government
agencies. Purposive sampling was used in this research. Descriptive qualitative
analysis was conducted to describe farmer livelihood strategies.
Majority of Sugihwaras farmer had a low education levels. In other hand, the
farmers also had the ability and skill in the agricultural sector, which is quite
good as a human asset. Ownership of agricultural land (as natural assets)
averaged less than 1 hectare. Farmers have physical assets such as homes, yards,
transportation and ordinary agricultural production tool. Most farmers are not
supported by good social relations, so the choice of livelihood strategies is very
limited. Group of less educated farmers with limited assets become the most
vulnerable one toward flooding. Sugihwaras farmers who had higher education
level and extensive relationship are very rare. This group was able to develop
agricultural diversification, so they have such kind of sufficient financial assets.
Government policies related to the management of agricultural systems becomes
an important key in avoiding losses caused by flooding. |
