Diseases or disorders of vision affect the size of the orbital cavity. In addition, the blind experience irregularities in facial growth and development due to the abnormal head and neck posture. Head posture of the blind is tilting more forward-downward compared to sighted people. This study is aimed to determine the differences of size of the anterior and posterior facial height between blind children and sighted children aged 7-11 years.
This research is a comparative study with a cross-sectional research design in 11 blind children aged 7-11 years who attended the SLB-A Yaketunis, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Linear measurements of total anterior facial height (N-Me), the upper anterior facial height (N-ANS), lower anterior facial height (ANS-Me), and posterior facial height (S-Go) are done. The size of these variables are compared to the size of sighted children. The mean of each variable between the two groups were compared using unpaired t-test. The results showed that there were significant differences in the size of the ANS-Me (p <0.05) between blind children and sighted children aged 7-11 years. On the size of the N-Me, N-ANS size, and S-Go does not show a significant differences (p> 0.05).
Based on these results we can conclude that the size of the lower anterior facial height on blind children aged 7-11 years is longer than sighted children and there are no differences in the size of the total anterior facial height, upper anterior facial height and posterior facial height between blind children and sighted children aged 7- 11 years. |
