Summary: | Development of Jayapura City has triggered the rapid of population growth,
land-use changes, physical and infrastructure development supported development
and community's socio-economic and cultural development of Jayapura City. The
research on Community's Perceptions Toward the Development Impact of
Jayapura City, Province of Papua has aimed to describe and document the
community's perception on the development impact of Jayapura City
The research method used is qualitative method by research instrument
using a structured interview in the form of questionnaire with answers choice and
informant reasons on giving answer. The research was done in Jayapura City with
research respondent/informant about 100 heads of household using a random
sampling purposive technique.
The results showed that development of Jayapura City has positive impact
and contribution to the increase of community economic welfare and GDP of
Jayapura City. Development of Jayapura City has provided many facilities as well
as improvement of the community quality of life, the easiness and smoothness in
business, as well as opening an employment opportunities for local communities so
that reducing the unemployment rate. The community was very supportive the
development initiatives, but if development involves conversion or the use of
customary land, there should be an agreement or compensation for the land in
accordance with the agreed. Development of Jayapura City also produced the
cultural change. Citizens accept the culture comes from the outside so that a
changing the community's lifestyles. Nevertheless the community's Jayapura city
still held the ancient traditions.
As consequence of development of Jayapura city that has been reached to
the land conversion of protected area due to the agricultural land conversion into
settlement or forest conservation and economic activity centers have negative
impact on narrowing the urban green areas and the physical environment
breakdown such as the creation of degradedland, erosion, landslides and flooding.
In addition the more dense of population followed by amount of vehicles owned
become the cause of traffic jam and the emergence of the garbage problem and
waste handling. This condition certainly gives consequence in reducing the
supporting capacity of environment to the community quality of life.
