Summary: | Giving a referendum on East Timor, President Habibie has opened a new chapter
for democratization in Indonesia. The decision taken by Habibe has put his
position on dualism conflicting decision. In the national level Habibie�s image
received less sympathy due to the separation of East Timor. On the contrary, in
the international side Habibie's decision bring the positive impact that managed
to lift the image of Indonesia. Yet the complicated relations between Indonesia,
United States and Australia concerning the East Timor also worsen the growing
dynamics in East Timor. Through the concept of rational choice, this study aims
in analyzing the patterns of thinking of Habibie in making the decision to provide
a referendum on East Timor. Also to show how America and Australia put their
position in the dynamic that occurred in East Timor and its relationship with
Indonesia.
