Summary: | This study is a study of William Faulkner�s Novel The Sound and The Fury
(TSTF) which is presumed having intertextual relationship with William
Shakespeare�s drama Macbeth. This study is aimed, firstly to find the intertextual
relationship between novel TSTF and drama Macbeth. Secondly, to find
intertextual relationship between novel TSTF with social, cultural and historical
texts of southern American society. Thirdly to find the significances of drama
Macbeth toward novel TSTF. This study applies Julia kristeva�s Theory on
intertextuality. The theory states that text is not an independent and closed system
object, text is considered as the mosaic of quotations, the text is an absorption and
transformation of other texts. The method which is applied in this study is an
intertextual method of Julua Kristeva, by analyzing some structures of textual
novelistic which builds the entire literary work, then try to find the relationship
with the outer texts, Macbeth and social cultural and historical texts. Then
Compare those two works from the structure inside of the works. The data sources
in this study consist of primary data and secondary data. The primary data of this
study is William Faulkner�s Novel TSTF. While some journals, book, and some
articles which have relationship with the primary data and also the theory are the
secondary data. Based on the study which has been conducted, it can be seen
clearly about the intertextual relationship between the novels TSTF by William
Faulkner with the outer texts. First the relationship of novel TSTF with drama
Macbeth is in thematic and some notions. The second is, there is intertextual
relationship between the novel TSTF and its social and cultural and historical
texts of southern American society. There are three significances of drama
macbeth toward novel TSTF. the first is the historical significance of drama
Macbeth and southern society. The second is the popularity of drama Macbeth
and also the author. The last is the thematic and some notions which are fit with
the portrayal of southern society condition. The taking of some conventions from
the outer text have a significant role toward ideology of the writer who wants to
give a picture and criticize about the condition of America especially in
Mississippi that most people have leaved the southern traditional values as the
effect of modernization in the state.
