| description | Background : Breast milk is the first and the best choice of food for infants in early life. Breastfeeding provides benefits for the baby. Various efforts have been taken by the government of Indonesia to encourage mothers to breastfeed their children exclusively. However, exclusive breastfeeding outcomes in most areas are still low. Yogyakarta is one of those areas, especially in the Gondokusuman Subistrict with breastfeeding outcome only 23.2%. The outcome should be 80% according to the target in the Minimum Service Standards of Health.This gap arises because of the barriers experienced by breastfeeding mothers in the Gondokusuman subdistric, Yogyakarta.
Objective : Assessing barriers to breast feed exclusively which is received by nursing mothers in the Gondokusuman subdistrict, Yogyakarta.
Methods : The type of research is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. In depth interviews and focus group discussion (FGD) are used for data collection techniques. Depth interviews were conducted to mothers who exclusively breastfed, mothers who did not exclusively breastfeed, the husband of nursing mothers, and health care workers. Examination of the trustworthiness of the study using triangulation of methods and sources. Thematic Content Analysis is used for data analysis.
Results : The result of this study indicate that there are social support barriers from health professionals in preparing the succes of exclusive breastfeeding during the period of pregnancy, such as limited access to information, the differences of breastfeeding support between doctors and midwives. Barriers to early initiation of breastfeeding implementation which is a form of instrumental support in breastfeeding by birth attendant health workers is the next obstacle. Health workers, family members, and others have a role in foiling exclusive breastfeeding in the postpartum phase, such as lack of information, the recommended of formula feeding by influential people, formula feeding by health personnel. Other barriers experienced by breastfeeding mothers in this study are that the production of breast milk is not smooth and the working nursing mothers very influential in the decision of exclusive breastfeeding or formula.
Conclusions : Breastfeeding mothers experience barriers of social support in breastfeeding since pregnancy. The barriers are most at risk is the one-week period after childbirth, that is when the production of breast milk has not been smooth, prompts formula feeding of influential people for breastfeeding mothers, and formula feeding by health workers. Therefore, it�s necessary for more mature preparation in pregnancy phase to prepare for the challenges and barriers for breastfeeding mothers to be able to provide breast milk exclusively. In addition, the necessary assistance and monitoring of influential people for nursing mothers in initiating and provide breastfeeding exclusively.
