description ABSTRACT: This study discussed about Korean mimetic adverbs expressing manner of “walking”. This study aimed to 1) inventory Korean mimetic adverbs expressing manner of walking, 2) describe their morphological and syntax aspects, 3) describe their meaning, and 4) describe the relation among sound alternation and final consonant and their meanings. The main data were derived from the sentences taken from The Korean Onomatopoeia and Mimesis book written by Lee Kay Won (2007), dictionaries, Naver and Daum website by using simak method and simak bebas libat cakap technique. The data were analyzed by using distributional method. The results of the data analysis were presented by using informal and formal method. The results of this study were as the following. Firstly, the form of Korean mimetic adverbs expressing manner of walking were divided into singular form and reduplication form. The reduplication form could be classified into 1) repetition from free morpheme, 2) repetition from bounded morpheme, and 3) reduplication form similar to repetition. Secondly, the rules of sentence structure using Korean mimetic adverbs expressing manner of walking could be divided into 1) S AMPVB P, 2) AMPVB S P, 3) S AMPVB Adv P, 4) S Adv AMPVB P, 5) S AMPVB KT P, 6) S KT AMPVB P, 7) S O AMPVB P, and 8) S AMPVB O P. Thirdly, the meanings of Korean mimetic adverbs expressing manner of walking can be classified into 1) not quickly, 2) with neat and voiced footsteps, 3) stealthily, 4) unsteady steps, 5) with heavy footsteps, 6) with soft steps, 7) with long steps, 8) crawling, 9) with spirited steps, and 10) without energy. Fourth, the vowel alternations showed the different people doing walking verbs and showed the different nuance of meanings about how big or small, light or heavy of the movement was. Meanwhile, the consonant alternations showed about how strong or rough the movement was. The final consonant could indicate 1) movement which is changed quickly caused by short stop, 2) movement happens continuously, 3) movement that seems like it remains a reflection, 4) movement which is closed or pressed closely, and 4) movement stops slowly.
