description Rail/road intersections on tramways are particularly hazardous. If implemented in Indonesia, tramways need to operate safely. Therefore investigating safe arrangements of tramway layouts, especially at intersections is conducted with a view to minimising potential accidents and maximising road safety in Indonesia. Some consideration is also given for tramway sections with parallel running with other road vehicles where this impacts intersection design. The approach used in the thesis involves analysis of accidents and safety measures at tram intersections in various western countries via literature searches and personal interviews. Recommendations for tram intersection design in Indonesia are then drawn from this analysis. Traffic conditions in Indonesia are significantly different to those in western countries. By considering a number of specific issues relating to Indonesia, so some safety measures may have more or less relevance in Indonesia. Different types of junctions need different solutions. In all situations it recognises that segregation of tramways from other road users is the safest option where the road width allows this. Overall, segregated tramways, installation and modification of traffic signals (including phasing changes to give priority to the tram) and grade separated intersections would be the most effective features in ensuring safety when designing tram intersections in Indonesia.
