Summary: | Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and PVA/chitosan (CS) blend fibers containing silver
nanoparticles were successfully produced with electrospinning method. PVA
fibers made from PVA solution of 11% with variation mass of AgNO3 used of
5%, 10%, and 20%. PVA/AgNO3/CS fiber is made by mixing colloidal
PVA/AgNO3 and CS with a volume ratio of 9/1 with AgNO3 concentration of 1%
and 5%. Silver nanoparticles contained in the fiber obtained by the method of
reduction for stirrer 6 hours. Electrospining parameter used is the distance
between the tip to to the collector of 13 cm, 15 kV applied voltage, and the
diameter of the needle of 0.5 mm. Colloids and fibers are then characterized by
UV-Vis to determine the absorbance of silver nanoparticles. Fibers is
characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) to determine the bond AgNO3
with PVA and PVA/CS. Fibers characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope
(SEM) and Trasnmition Electron Microscope (TEM) to determine the
morphology fibers and size distribution and average diameter silver nanoparticles
on the surface of fiber. Obtained an average diameter fiber (550 ± 50) nm for
PVA/AgNO3 5% with an average diameter of silver nanoparticles (3,5 ± 0,5) nm
and a particle density of 18,4 x 103 particles/μm2. In fibers PVA/AgNO3 20%
average diameter fiber (500 ± 50) nm. Average diameter fibers of the
PVA/AgNO3 5% blend with CS is (370 ± 90) nm with an average diameter of
silver nanoparticles is (8,0 ± 1,5) nm and a particle density of 11,2 x 103
particles/μm2. From this study, obtained on the surface of PVA/CS fibers, silver
nanoparticles have smaller density and larger size than silver nanoparticles on the
surface of PVA fiber without CS.
