| Summary: | Various methods are applied by social movements that exist in the society to
accelerate their efforts in order to reach their goals. One interesting phenomenon that
exists in our society today is Gusdurian movement. A fluid cultural movement, nonpolitical
practices, which consists of individuals, local communities and institutions that
support the idea, to set an example of Gus Dur's character, values and principles, and
trying to continue Gus Dur's struggle, now establishing their community as a solid and
massive network to reach their goals: spreading Gus Dur's spirits to the entire society.
Until the end of 2014, Gusdurian movement has spread its wings to 90-100 local
communities, dozens of institutions, and a number of individuals who until now one
knows how many for sure. Synergy of the members sought as much as possible to become
a major force network-based movement that has 9 (nine) spirit of Gus Dur as its major
resource. To smooth its efforts in managing the network, Gusdurian movement trying to
initiate a National Secretariat that seeks to \"knit the patchwork\" of Gusdurian that
scattered across the country. But in its dynamics, the existence of National Secretariat is
slowly moving to the "formal"-way one, and leave the works of "fluid" movement which
recently used to be Gusdurian's "weapon" in its own activity. Emotional relationships,
power and interests are fulfiling the background of the networks among its members.
Network with a unique way of constitutive patterned patchwork's synergy between
Gusdurian members become the main resource and a kind of movement's strategy that
distinguishes Gusdurian from similar social movements. The finding about unique
networking pattern which is so different from other social movements become the main
contribution of this study.
This study basically trying to reveal the pattern and criticize the network
management that applied by Gusdurian movement. Using the combination of new social
movements concept, Giddens structuration's theory and network management concepts,
the authors try to do an ethnographic research to be actively involved in any activity that
held by Gusdurian movement and the National Secretariat to bring the exposure of the
dynamics and management of networks that applied by Gusdurian movement. As the
author, I hope this thesis could describe the other side of the study of social movement,
especially the perspective of social movement's network. This study could show the other
side of Gusdurian movement and distinguishing it from social movements in general, as
well as showing a new social movement phenomena emerging in Indonesia today.
