Summary:Steels are very important materials used in foundry engineering. Their physical and mechanical properties must be improved for better product quality. The aim of this research is investigate the influences of C on the physical and mechanical properties of low alloy steel 41xx. The materials used in this research were low alloy steel produced by PT Baja Kurnia at Ceper, Klaten, with variations of C content, namely 0,29; 0,31; 0,36; 0,40 & 0,42 wt %. Tests were done to observe the microstructure and mechanical properties of the specimens including Vickers hardness and tensile strength. Results show that for 0,29 wt % to 0,4 wt % C, Vickers hardness and tensile strength increase (as cast specimens: 230 to 333 VHN and 67 to 84 kg/mm2, after normalizing-tempering : 295 to 351 VHN and 80 to 98 kg/mm2). Optimum result occur at 0,4 wt % for hardness and tensile strength due to increment amount of pearlite as observed in microstructure.
