Malnutrition among underfives is a general problem. Mother's poor knowledge about food composition and children care were two indirect problems cause malnutrition. Through nutrition counselling, it is hoped that mother's nutrition knowledge and nutrition intake among underfives are improved so it may increase underfives nutrition status. The study was proposed to know the influence of nutrition counselling to martenal nutrition knowledge and nutrition status improvement among malnutrition underfives who get recovery food supplementation.
This was quasy experiment with pre and postest with control group design. Subjects were malnutrition underfives included in inclusi criteria. The first group were 35 underfives whose mothers got individual counselling through home visit while the second group were 35 underfives whose mothers got group counselling. Maternal nutrition knowledge were obtained using questionnaire while nutrition intake using 24 hours food recall during 7 days and processed using FP2. Nutrition status were determined based on weight for age z score and weight for height z score.
Student's t- test analysis showed that there were significant differences of nutrition knowledge between two groups before and after counselling. After treatment, energy intake was improved 54.3% in the first group and 27.2% in the second group while protein intake was 93% in the first group and 43.6% in the second group. T-test analysis showed that there were significant differences of energy and protein intake between two groups before and after counseling. Based on weight for age z score and weight for height z score, the improvement of nutrition status among underfives in the first group were better than the second group. It was concluded thatnutrition couseling individual was significantly influenced maternal nutrition knowledge and malnutrition underfives nutrition status.
