Summary:ABSTRAK One of efforts to promote a hospital is to identify the main target of hospital users and to plan services relevant to market demand. Local government of Banggai Kepulauan District plans to build a hospital type C so that it is necessary to consider types of health services needed by the community of Banggai Kepulauan, particularly services related to demand for inpatient. Results of some studies show that demands for hospital inpatients are related to and influenced by factors such as: number and characteristics of population, income of the community, service tariff, availability of specialists, ease of access to hospital, quality of service, community health behavior, and so on. The study was meant to know whether there was significant relationship between age, gender, level of education, job, access to hospital, and method of payment with demand for inpatient at Luwuk Hospital of Banggai Kepulauan District community. The result of the study was also assumed as factors related to demand for inpatient at Banggai Kepulauan hospital. This was a descriptive type of study which used a correlational method approach. The population of the study were Banggai Kepulauan community who were inpatients at Luwuk Hospital, a referral hospital of Banggai Kepulauan community. Demand for inpatient observed was visit per category of treatment class. The study took secondary data from daily census and status of inpatient of Luwuk Hospital from 2000 - 2003. Data were analyzed using Chi square presented in cross table. Correlation and significance of correlation result were processed using SPSS program version 11.5. Result of chi square test showed that some factors had calculation chi square comparion higher than table chi square and probability less than 0.05 such as: age, education, job and method of payment. Whereas gender and access to Luwuk Hospital had calculation chi square comparison higher than table chi square and probability more than 0.05. There was irregular monthly demand for inpatient at Luwuk hospital with average growth of number of inpatient as much as 7.6% per year. There was significant relationship between age, education, job and method of payment with demand for hospital inpatient based on category of treatment class. On the other hand there was no significant relationship between gender and access to hospital with demand for hospital inpatient based and category of treatment class. Needs for beds based on: age composition were 43 % for children and 57 for adults
