Summary: | Inbreeding increased variability among individuals within a population. Genetic variability among inbred family increasesd effectiveness of selection among families but decreases effectiveness of selection among individuals within a family.
The research was carried out in two stages: development of half-sib and S2 families and evaluation of the families. Evaluation was designed in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three blocks as replications. Each replication consisted of nine sets, in thirteen groups of families of one S2 family and three corresponding half-sib families.
The results indicated the presence of significant additive and dominance variances, eventhough one of four estimates had a large standard deviation. It meant that improvement could be realized of developing both hybrid, and open pollinated varieties.
The expected genetic gain of S2 family selection for all traits was greater then half-sib family selection.
