description | ABSTRACT:
Study on the community structure of soil microarthropods in rehabilitated quarried was conducted at a traditional brick production. area in Yogyakarta. There were six rehabilitated sites selected and sampled twice, on September 4, 1994 (dry season) and on January 24, 1995 (wet season). The sites were newly disrupted site, one year cultivated site, three year cultivated site, three year uncultivated grass sod site, one year dumping site, and eight year home garden.
Results of the study revealed that the three year cultivated and eight year home garden sites found to have the highest numbers of species (15 species) and a total of 1,522 and 681 individuals respectively. The three year cultivated site had the highest stability of soil microarthropods community. Two-dimensional ordination analysis showed an agreement to the analysis of the stability of the communities. The three year cultivation found to be the most favorable habitat for the biotic community. Apparently cultivation and time could play greater influence to the achievement of the communities stability in the rehabilitated quarried sites. Organic utilization might also shortened the period of the rehabili¬tation. Leaving the quarried site as a grass sod could lengthen the rehabilitation period.
