description Abstract Pesticide was one of the input used in rice production. The benefit of pesticide was in reducing yield loss caused by pest attacks. However, since pesticide was a toxic agent that dangerous to human health and environment, it also caused externalities. The external costs caused by pesticide are considerably high. Government of Indonesia had been introducing integrated pest management (IPM) technology in order to reduce pesticide used in rice production. Regional demand of pesticide and supply of rice functions were employed for determining the impact of IPM technology dissemination. Demand of pesticide and supply of rice described the benefit of pesticide and the cost of rice production respectively. Time series data from 1989 until 1998 from related institutions were used for estimation. The result of the analyses indicated that pesticide use was declined by dissemination of IPM technology, without reducing rice production, but increasing rice production instead. It implied that externality of pesticide use was reduced, while rice production was increase. It could be said that IPM technology had brought rice production in Yogyakarta to a sustainable condition. Keywords: pesticide -externality ~ integrated pest management (IPM)
