Description
Summary:ABSTRACT After Pengajian Padang Bulan established since 8 years ago, in the reformation period in 2001, Emha Ainun Nadjib launched an activity named Maiyah, an action - on a certain perspective - that was not popular, although now it is becoming a magnet forthousands of moslems. Followed by a huge number of jamaah (the followers), it is not strange that suspiciously this activity seems to be showing power. On the contrary, this activity reveals itself as a rites activity. If connected to practical politics, it seems to be empowering or political education. Maiyah could be seen as a social-culture phenomenon based on its continuity, in which relevant anthropological research is to be done. Thus, the main research problem is: what is the real meaning hidden behind the Maiyah activity? This discussion is based on a theory recognized by Clifford Geertz, that culture could be assumed as a matter analogically connected to a text. Culture is the harmony of texts, a medium to say about something else. In this theory as like it, the social scientist job is not to make the explanation nor search a causal relation of elements in the text or make certain a relation of texts, but to understand or more accurately to give meaning to the texts. By doing research - using some methods such as participation observatory interviews and documentation studies - in various periods, this discussion shows thatMaiyah was the phenomenon of the contemporary Islamic society (umat Islam) or kaum santri. The activity attempting ritual aspect was not just for the sake of an activity of religious rites. The aspiration turned up on the meaning of wind, prayer, and.themes of dialog - shows that this activity is not more than a social movement of Islamic society. The movement is transformed to be a communal Islamic movement that has special characteristics such as the existence of the central figure, who has a strong role in the community, and the existence of communal jamaah. Finally, this research revealed that the meaning behind the activity of the community is the existence of revivalism of a communal Islamic movement, an antithesis of associational Islamic movement.
