description | ABSTRACT
Polystyrene is applied in human life, now, especially for packaging. Used polystyrene becomes a problem to the environments, since it is not biodegradable. Pyrolysis (i.e. thermal degradation) is one of several methods in the processing of plastic wastes. The aim of this research is to investigate the characteristics of pyrolysis of polystyrene materials. The experiment was carried out in a batch process.
Pyrolysis process was conducted in a cylindrical retort provided with an electrical heater, water cooler, and liquid product collector. About 30 g of polystyrene material was pyrolyzed per batch Three kinds of polystyrene were chosen: solid, granular, and foam. The pyrolysis temperature was varied between 380' to 580'C. The liquid product was collected in certain time interval and weighed. The experiment was halted when no more liquid was produced The composition of liquid product was determined by gas chromatography.
Pyrolysis of polystyrene produced toluene, ethyl benzen, styrene, and isopropyl benzen in liquid product |
