description ABSTRACT The aerobic dances could be classified as low impact and high impact aerobic dance (LIAD and HIAD). In LIAD one foot remains in contact with the floor all the times, whereas in HIAD sometimes the two feet do not make contact with the floor, during the dances. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of LIAD and HIAD on muscle mass and muscle strength and to compare the effects between the two types of the dances. Sixty female students of Faculty of Sport Sciene Yogyakarta State University, aged 18-21 years. They are divided into 3 groups, namely: control group, LIAD group and HIAD group. The LIAD group was given low impact aerobic dance and set at 60 - 79% of MHR (maximal heart rate), the HIAD group was given high impact aerobic dance and set at 80 - 89% MHR, while the control group was not engaged any aerobic activity. The dances were set for 40 - 50 minutes, three times per week for 8 weeks. Muscle mass was measured indirectly by employing the Matiegka formula. The muscle strength was measured using dynamometer. The muscles measured were hand grip, shoulder pull, leg and back. Data was collected before exercise and 2,4,6 and 8 weeks after the exercise. The results showed that both in LIAD (p
