Summary:ABSTRACT This is a library research which deals with "rap music" as an element of the Blacks' culture. This kind of music is discussed within American Popu¬lar Culture. This music is believed as a representation of Black Experience in their life for survival. The result of this research shows that "rap" is an unspoken voice, a term of protest, and an alternative model of marginalized cultural element. It is seen further that "rap" is not merely a music for dancing, but reflecting a cultural identity of the Blacks in America. Rap music in America was assumed as "controversial" since its ap¬pearance in the late 1970. The controversial assumption refers to its prosteting lyrics againts the social order, the use of sarcastic language, lyrics about drugs, violence, sex, illegal weapon trading. The involvement of rap music into American popular culture is seen through the mass media. Rap music has become a musical genre of Black people. Rap music is assumed as phenomenally profitable and made its musicians to be well-known world wide. Key Words: Rap Music�Afro-American Culture�American Popular Culture � controversial.
