In the pronunciation of French, the speaker of Indonesian tends to absorb Indonesian phones. It results from the presence of the predominant difference between the principles of French and that of Indonesian.
The objectives of the study are to describe the difference in the phonologic principles of French and that of Indonesian, to determine the F'rench phoneme which is affected by the interference of Indonesian and to identify the causal factor of the phonologic interference of Indonesian in French.
The data of the study is collected from the oral speech of French by Indonesian speakers by considering that the oral speech represents the basic ability underlying other abilities in learning foreign language.
To meet the objectives, the following study steps are made: 1) to determine the respondents, 2) to collect the data in the form of French word ant sentences, 3) to identify the 'phonologic difference of French and Indonesian, 4) to observe the kinds of the phonemic interference pronounced by the respondents, 5) to interpret the observation results.
The results of the study show that each language has its own uniqueness. The phonological principles of French differ from that of Indonesian. It can be clearly observed in their phonologic system, syllable structure, and orthographic and pronunciation system. The phonemes which are not found in Indonesian, as nasal phonemes results in the interference of French.
The underlying factor of the interference is of linguistic one, i.e. the effect of the principles of Indonesian that is essentially different from that of French. In socio-linguistic factor, it is caused by the lack of the attention of Indonesian speakers to the principles of French they are learning. The use of French in the communication activities taking place only in certain situation and circumstance, also underlies the interference.
