Ascariasis is a parasitic disease which is widely distributed in Indonesia, especially in rural areas with relatively high prevalence rates. The prevalence rates and intensity of infection seems to be related with the level of education, type of occupation and the traditional habits of the people in the disposal of faeces.
A study on ascariasis had been conducted in rural areas of Kasongan, Bantul Regency, and Sidorejo, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta_ General household survey about age, sex, level of education, typeof accupation, and the habits of the people in faeces disposal was done by using question.aires
Faecal samples were collected from approximately 40% of the people selected randomly, and examined quantitatively for Ascaris lumbricoides eggs by using Kato's thick smear method as described by Katz et al, and Kobayashi (1974).
Soil samples were obtained from 10% randomly selected houses in these two study villages. Soil examination for 'A. lumbricoides eggs was done be using simple method as described by Rukmono et al. (1977) and Ismid at al. (1978).
The results show that the degree of soil contamination with Ascaris eggs in Kasongan was higher (28.3%) than those in Sidorejo (2.7%). The prevalence rate of ascariasis in Kasongan was significantly higher (50.8%) than those in Sidorejo (13.5%). The intensity of infection as estimated by the number of eggs per gram of faeces (NEPG) in Kasongan was 3267, while in Sidorejo, it is only 623.Both in Kasongan and in Sidorejo, the highest preialence rate of ascariasis was found among the children 5-9 years of age
