To sustain higher loading is usually the main objective to strengthen an old structure. Connection in timber structure is commonly known as the weakest part of structure. To strengthen an old timber structure means to improve the strength of connection itself. The addition of new connector may increase the connection strength. However, the addition of new connectors must consider the feasibility of connector placement.
Six bolted-connections which were strengthened with Pryda metal plate connectors and two timber connections with Pryda metal plate connectors were tested under tensile load. To simulate the actual method of strengthening, Pryda metal plate connectors were placed into bolted connection when the connection sustains about 50 or 75 percentage of its ultimate strength. Nail plate and Knuckle, two types of Pryda metal plate connectors, were used.
Experimental results have shown that the addition of Pryda metal plate connectors increase the ultimate strength of bolted connections significantly. Bolted connections which are strengthened at 75 percentage of its ultimate strength give higher ultimate strength than that of bolted connections which are strengthened at 50 percentage of its ultimate strength. However, the effect of strengthening is disappeared when the maximum slip of Pryda metal plate connection is exceeded.
