Description
Summary:In this study the characteristics of a cooling tower with wavy plastics as packing material have been investigated experimentally. The experiments were carried out in a rectangle glass tower of 100 cm2 cross sectional area and 100 cm height. The packing used was wavy plastics placed vertically above the stainless steel support on the tower bottom. The thickness of the wavy plastics used was 0.5 mm, the wave height was 0.64 cm and the wave length was 3.18 cm. The experimental results show that the tower characteristic increases with the increase in the packing height and hot water inlet temperature and with the decrease in the water/air mass flux ratio. The tower characteristics as a function of the investigated variables is expressed as: KaVL " 0 0.3047 1 4 1 0 (Tm )1.9074 L . 4.1849x10-5( The equation is valid for the ranges of the experimental variables were LIG of 6.25 - 27.34, Z of 30 - 90 cm, and T, of 40 -55"C. The equation can be used to predict the tower characteristic with the relative error of 4.09%. The mean effectiveness of heat transfer in the tower was calculated to be 30.3%.
