Description
Summary:ABSTRACT Greentea polyphenols are chemical substances in tea leaves which are widely consumed arround the world. Polyphenols have been reported to have numerous biological activities: as antimutagenic, antibacterial and inhibit viral infection. Polyphenols have also been reported to stimulate IL-12 production which play a crucial role in the development of Cell Mediated Immunity. Cellular immune responses especially mediated by macrophages are important defense mecanism during malarial infection. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of polyphenols on the cellular immune responses during P.berghei infection in mice. Three group of Balb/c mice were used. First group was given with 10 mg poliphenols/ mouse/day for 30 days, second group was given with 5 mg/mouse/ day and the third group was not as the control group. After 30 days all mice were infected with lx 108 P.berghei infected red-blood cells. Every other days, 3 mice of each group were sacrificed, the serum were prepared to measure the interferon gamma level and peritoneal macrophages were extracted and cultured for phagocytic and reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) secretion assay. The results indicated that the parasitemia of mice which were given 10 mg polyphenols/mouse/day was increase slower and the percentage of parasitemia was lower significantly on day 3 & 4 after infection and the lifespan of the mice was longer compared to control group. The level of serum IFN-y and the phagocytic & ROI secretion activity of peritoneal macrophages in this group increased since day 0 before infection and reached a peak on day 6 after infection then declined.
